Helpful hints about spending time in our cabin area.

Always look outside for animals before you exit your cabin. We have had bears in the past and there is always the chance of a moose being in the neighborhood.

Have you ever had the vent pipe torn off your roof from the ice and snow? I have, twice, and this last time it was reinforced.  Summit County says that you can now run that vent pipe out of the side of your cabin. It must be 36 inches from any window and 18 inches down from the roof. If you do this way make sure you cap the end with some type of screen and seal around the pipe to prevent little creatures from entering.

When I was building we stayed in our tent trailer. My wife had to have a portable john so we rented one for the first two summers.  The gentlemen that we rented from; Hector, had his own septic tank formula that he said was better that any on the market. I’ve been using it since 1999 and have yet to have any problems.

Two cups of brown sugar dissolved in two quarts of luke warm water.
Mix in eight to ten packs of yeast. Mix like you are making bread.

Let it sit for three to five minutes and either flush it down your system or pour it into your septic tank.

This should be done in the spring as soon as you start to use the home and again in the fall when you shut off the water.

I’ve been using wild life cameras for years. I’ve gotten photos of does, bucks fawns even triplets. Bull and Cow Moose, their calf’s and even twins a couple of times. I like the Browning Recon trail cams. You can set single photos or multiple shots,  videos just about any way you want to set it up. It also helps with a little cabin security. I get photos of people and dogs walking through several times a year. These cameras would be ideal for monitoring the gates.

Trailers:  How many times have you hooked up your trailer only to find your tail lights don’t work? The easiest way to keep the plug ends from corroding is just to use the female piece. You almost always get both when you buy them and most people just throw away the piece they don’t need. I tape mine to the trailer and when not being towed I plug it in.

Plants and Trees: Most of the plants and trees you bring up probably won’t grow anyway due to our elevation. There is section in this web site that lists the plants and trees that will grow up here. Play special attention to the fire wise plants. They are not fire proof but will slow down any advancing fire.
